A long time ago there was a game, a game that would change the future of gaming forever. This game created a totally new genre of computer games. It mixed action and limited 3D graphics with violence. It started a new age of gaming and one that was soon to be played by all who new anything about games in general. The genre of gaming that was created was the First Person Shooter, or as we like to know it as FPS. The game that was most well known as the granddaddy of all FPSs, was called Wolfenstein 3D.
Wolfenstein 3D was made what seems like eons ago. It was well known for its violence and its originality. Anyone who knows anything about computers and games in general will know what Wolfenstein 3D is, and what it means to the gaming world. Id hate to think what the world would be like if Wolfenstein 3D was never created. There would no longer be some of the most well known and played games of out time. Quake 3 (Rocket Arena) would be just a dream in the minds of game players everywhere. It has been many years since any one even mentioned the name Wolfenstein until now.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein or RtCW as we have now named it is the follow up to the game, which started it all. RtCW has been in the making for a while now, lots of people heard the news of what was to come and wait in anticipation of the first screenshots of their most treasured games sequel. If you thought Final Fantasy the movie was hyped, that was nothing compared to the hype surrounding RtCW. RtCW was at the top of all the PC magazines readers most wanted lists. People would do anything just to get even a quick glimpse of a video clip or picture, which had anything to do with RtCW, the game they had been waiting for.
RtCW has some help though and some big help it is. Quake 3 Arena is one of the most used and played FPS titles around. Quake 3, is not only played by thousands, if not millions of gamers around the world, but it is also used for hardware testing. Accuracy is a critical need when testing pc hardware, such as graphics cards and motherboards. It is also used by all of the best hardware sites, such as Legion Hardware. Most games these days have plenty of bugs in them and even after many patches and fixes they still rear their ugly heads. Not so for Quake three though. Quake three is both stable and reliable. Chances are that if your pc crashes while playing it was definitely a hardware issue, because Quake 3 is absolutely crash free.
The reason Quake 3 plays an integral part of RtCW is that RtCW runs on and advanced version of the Quake 3 game engine. This means that RtCW will have some sort of advantage over its competition seeing that it is being run on an already perfected game engine. A game engine that even now, in its aging form is still up there with the best.
