Today we are checking out the new Thermaltake BigTyp VP cooler which is yet another revision of the original Big Typhoon. There have been no major design changes made, though this latest version does include a great new feature that will improve overall system cooling...

Thermaltake had a lot of success with their original Big Typhoon cooler which they released way back in 2005. Since then they have released numerous revisions of the same cooler that have allowed it to support the latest platforms along with a few new features. The BigTyp 120VX for example, introduced the VR fan speed controller which was a welcomed addition. The version we have here today keeps the fan speed controller while adding a new and very unique feature.

The Big Typhoon series has become successful for a few reasons. First of all the performance is very good, and while this cooler does an excellent job of keeping the processor cool, it is also very good at cooling surrounding components. The new BigTyp VP version does this even better. The BigTyp VP features a unique bracket that supports an additional 120mm fan which is provided. This fan can be used to direct air over designated components such as the chipset, memory, or graphics cards.

The price has also helped make the Big Typhoon series a success, as the original cooler sold for less than $50 US, which was impressive for such a huge cooler offering such a high level of performance. Furthermore, with the Big Typhoon users get the entire package: 120mm fan, fan speed controller, fan grill, and a universal heatsink, that can quickly and easily be installed on the latest AMD and Intel motherboards.

Over time the Big Typhoon has slowly become more and more expensive, with the last version (BigTyp 120 VX) costing around $55 US. Currently we are not quite sure what the new Thermaltake BigTyp VP version is going to retail for, but we expect it to cost around the $60 US mark, making it very expensive. That said, considering the package includes two high quality 120mm fans and a fan speed controller, the price is not all that bad when compared to other high-end air-cooled products…
