DISCUSS REVIEW
Today we are checking out a new DDR2 memory kit from G.Skill featuring a pair of 2GB modules. Each module is designed to work in dual-channel mode using relatively low timings and sports its own unique heatsink. However it’s not the unique cooling, low-latency timings or 4GB capacity that makes this kit so impressive, rather it is the value…

With many users now moving to 64-bit operating systems, it is now possible to take full advantage of cheaper DDR2 memory kits offering 4GB and greater capacities. These days it is rare to spend over $100 US on a 4GB DDR2 memory kit, which is amazing. Generally only the most high-end overclocking memory costs in excess of $100 US, while it is possible to get 4GB kits for as little as $65 US.

Typically these kits feature timings of CAS 5-5-5-18 and work at 800MHz. However just recently a memory module manufacturer known as G.Skill, has released what is quite possibly the best value DDR2-800 memory available. The new G.Skill PI Black PC2-6400 (4GB) memory kit works using CAS 4-4-4-12 timings, features improved cooling, and works at standard voltages. While this is all very good, it is made far more impressive by the fact that G.Skill are selling the kit for just $70 US.

As far as we are aware there is no other 4GB (2 x 2GB) memory kit that works at standard voltages using these timings while costing so little. The G.Skill PI Black series now features a number of DDR2 memory kits, many of which feature 4GB capacities. Interestingly, in addition to the PI Black PC2-6400 (4GB) memory kit there is also a PI Black PC2-7200 (4GB) kit, which uses the same timings with slightly more voltage (2.1v – 2.2v).

Therefore, we expect that our PI Black PC2-6400 (4GB) memory kit will happily work at 900MHz using the CAS 4-4-4-12 timings, which really would be something for such a large capacity kit. Although 4GB DDR2 memory kits are nothing new, as we reviewed our first early last year, low-latency kits priced well under $100 US are new, and this is what makes the G.Skill PI Black PC2-6400 (4GB) memory kit so exciting...
